- Feb 16, 2020Who Has Believed?
Feb 16, 2020Who Has Believed? The indictment by Jesus at the end of His public ministry is that God has granted more than enough light, and people do not believe. The rejection of God the Son shows how deeply sin runs, how dead man is in sin, and his unable we are of changing our nature. Yet, by His grace, God frees His people from sin by penetrating their hearts with the gospel, transforming us to a renewed life in Christ.
- Feb 9, 2020For This Purpose I Have Come
Feb 9, 2020For This Purpose I Have ComeAs Jesus came to the end of His public ministry, all things written about Him in the Old Testament were coming to a climax. The cross opens up the way of everlasting life to all people, the good news proclaimed everywhere. We hear the call only by His grace, understanding our sinfulness, repenting, and trusting in the Son who died and rose again.
- Jan 19, 2020Hard Realities, Glorious Promises
Jan 19, 2020Hard Realities, Glorious PromisesJesus never tells us simply what we want to hear, but He plainly teaches the difficult realities of the Christian life. As His people, we are called to be willing to die to ourselves and our sin, humbling ourselves, and loyally following Christ, wherever He leads. However, we are promised the fruits of following Him, His righteousness shone in us, and even sharing His inheritance of the nations.
- Jan 12, 2020Trust, Serve, Worship
Jan 12, 2020Trust, Serve, WorshipIn John 12, we see a powerful contrast between what true faith looks like and the hallmarks of a false profession. On the one side, Lazarus, Martha, and Mary display the testimony of God’s free regenerating grace, the service that we give to God, and the unashamed worship we offer. Judas on the other hand scoffs at true worship, rebukes generous service to the Lord, and displays in his heart unbelief.
- Jan 5, 2020Jesus Must Die
Jan 5, 2020Jesus Must DieTo the unregenerate, the idea of free grace is terrifying because it takes control completely out of our hands. Christ’s demand is for our whole being, and that kills the autonomy we want in our rebellion. But true faith is based only on the free grace of God in Christ, and if He isn’t everything to us, then He is nothing.
- Dec 1, 2019More Than A Miracle
Dec 1, 2019More Than A MiracleJesus’s raising Lazarus from the dead was an amazing work, but it points to something even more amazing. The focus is on Christ and His power to call a dead man from the grave with a command that must be obeyed. And this is what happens spiritually to all of those whom Christ calls: we are risen from our deadness in sin and are drawn to repentance and faith by the work of the Holy Spirit.
- Nov 24, 2019Your Brother Will Rise Again
Nov 24, 2019Your Brother Will Rise AgainAfter the death of Lazarus, Jesus interacts with Martha and Mary, dealing with the finality of death as the result of sin. In these interactions, we see clearly the deity of Christ in His claim to be the exclusive source of life, as well as His humanity in His real emotion and indignation toward death, an enemy.
- Nov 17, 2019This Doesn’t End In Death
Nov 17, 2019This Doesn’t End In DeathThe story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead is a familiar one, but we cannot miss Jesus’ initial response to the news of Lazarus’ sickness and death. Out of love, Jesus does not immediately go to heal Lazarus, in order that He may demonstrate His sovereignty over all things, His providential working, and His authority over death.
- Nov 3, 2019The Good Shepherd (Part 2)
Nov 3, 2019The Good Shepherd (Part 2)10 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. 7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”

Sep 29, 2019ControversyJesus’ healing of the man born blind began serious controversy, the nature of which is exemplary of the responses unbelievers have to the gospel. We see examples of skepticism, hostility, and division, revealing just how deep our sinful nature runs.
- Sep 22, 2019Contact
Sep 22, 2019ContactAs we reach the story of John’s gospel of Jesus healing a man born blind, we see again and again Jesus establishing authority. This man was born blind and encountered Jesus according to the definite sovereign plan of God, which reminds us of God’s definite purpose in healing the spiritual blindness of all of His people, bringing them into the light of salvation.
- Jun 16, 2019Confronting Unbelief With The Truth
Jun 16, 2019Confronting Unbelief With The TruthIn John’s gospel, Jesus time and again reveals the ugly reality of the Pharisees’ false religion. His response is always to plainly tell the truth, as well as offer hope. And no matter how much people may reject or revile us, we must do the same.

- May 26, 2019Yes, You Can Know
May 26, 2019Yes, You Can KnowEvery Christian struggles at times with assurance; in John 8, Jesus teaches us that we can be certain of our salvation. We are called to abide in Christ, to be absolutely anchored in him alone. When we do this, we are freed from the enslavement and guilt of sin. So we must examine ourselves; do we manifest the obedience, repentance, and freedom that accompany abiding in Christ.
- May 19, 2019The Light of the World
May 19, 2019The Light of the WorldBy declaring himself to be the light of the world, Jesus makes an exclusive claim as the way of salvation. The true light exposes the sinful heart, and so man often twists Christianity into a false religion. However, anything apart from Christ is darkness, no matter how it may appear.
- May 12, 2019Living Waters
May 12, 2019Living WatersAt the end of Jesus’ time at the Feast of Booths in John 7, he makes it clear that the feast, and everything it pointed to, were fulfilled in him. He shows himself to be the only source of true life, deliverance, and salvation, and the call to all people is to trust in him alone.
- May 5, 2019You Know Me??
May 5, 2019You Know Me??As we continue to press on through the Gospel of John, Jesus more and more deeply reveals the unbelief of the people. He showed who he was plainly, leaving people without excuse, and yet they did not truly believe in him. And Jesus warns them of the consequence of unbelief: they will not be able to go to where he is.
- Apr 28, 2019Establishing Authority, Exposing Sin
Apr 28, 2019Establishing Authority, Exposing SinAs we continue our series through John, we see Jesus again and again establishing his authority, not by man or by other teachers, but by who he is - the Son of God. His teachings are perfect, originating from Heaven itself. And he doesn’t stop with simply establishing his authority, but he exposes the sinful hearts of the false teachers. We are called to discern every teaching according to its consistency with God’s Word.

Mar 24, 2019Salvation — All of Grace, All of GodJesus’ teaching on salvation in John 6 is abundantly clear: not one person is able to be saved unless God has chosen them; every single person who belongs to God has absolute, perfect assurance of their salvation in Christ.
- Mar 17, 2019The Bread of Life

- Feb 17, 2019In Plain Sight
Feb 17, 2019In Plain SightWhen Jesus establishes who he is, he does so on the authority of the Old Testament Scripture. As we look at some of the Old Testament, it is clear that all of it points to Christ; however, in order to see it and truly put faith in Christ, the sinful heart must first be changed. The Bible must shape our worldview, not the other way around.
- Feb 3, 2019Self-Disclosure
Feb 3, 2019Self-DisclosureIn just a few verses in John chapter 5, Jesus establishes his authority and tells us so much about who he is: he claims to be of the same nature as God, equal in power with God, and equal in authority with God.
- Jan 27, 2019Confrontation…Frustration
Jan 27, 2019Confrontation…FrustrationJohn 5:1-17 demonstrates to us two flavors of unbelief with which we are familiar. With the healed invalid, we see someone so near the truth, but lukewarm to it, with no conviction or true faith. The Pharisees demonstrate a legalism that seeks to work so hard at getting to God, that it results in pride, and a rejection of God. As Christians, we rest in the grace of God in fulfilling the law for us, and we do not back down from confrontation or opposition.
- Jan 6, 2019Gospel Transformation (Continued)
Jan 6, 2019Gospel Transformation (Continued)We can learn much from the story of Jesus’ encounter with the woman of Samaria, including the consequences that we see when a person comes to Christ. We find that the gospel forces us out of our comfort zone, that we are completely freed from our shame, and that nothing is more important to us than Jesus.
- Dec 9, 2018Gospel Transformation
Dec 9, 2018Gospel TransformationIn a more detailed look at Jesus’ encounter with the Woman at the well, we see several key characteristics of the gospel. It is the only offer of life and it confronts us in our sin. However, it also goes on to pay the price for our sin, and even changes our lives.
- Dec 2, 2018If You Knew The Gift of God
Dec 2, 2018If You Knew The Gift of GodAn introduction to the familiar episode of Jesus and the Woman at the Well. Several elements jump out: God’s sovereign ordination of this encounter, Christ’s dual natures, the Samaritan woman’s need for Christ, and the global, barrier breaking purpose of the gospel.
- Nov 25, 2018I Must Decrease
Nov 25, 2018I Must DecreaseChristianity challenges our natural ideas of success and gain - consistent Christian living must result in our decrease. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we must be made nothing, so that people would see not us, but Christ in us.

Nov 18, 2018For God So Loved…One of Scripture’s most famous passages is John 3:16, and it is packed with depth. Not only do we see the atonement as perfect evidence of God’s love for His people, but we also get insight into Christ’s authority and His work in salvation.
- Nov 11, 2018You Must Be Born Again
Nov 11, 2018You Must Be Born AgainIn our sin and in our pride, we would like to think that we have some part in our salvation. Jesus teaches that the opposite is true - being born again is all of grace and is all of God. We don't have the power to win souls for Christ. The Lord saves whom He will, but as Christians we must proclaim the Gospel as He gives us opportunity, we must pray for the lost, and we must place our confidence in Jesus Christ to change hearts as only He is able to do.
- Nov 4, 2018Cleaning House
Nov 4, 2018Cleaning HouseJesus’ cleansing of the temple tells us much about his person and work. His authority as God the Son is on display, in bringing judgement upon false religion and hypocrisy; the temple itself points to the ultimate work of Christ, bringing people into the presence of God.
- Oct 28, 2018Signs: The Pattern & Purpose of Miracles
Oct 28, 2018Signs: The Pattern & Purpose of MiraclesThere are a number of misconceptions about miracles, which typically come in two extremes: embarrassment over affirming miracles, or downplaying their majesty. Miracles are a direct act of God in the natural world, essential to the Christian faith, which serve to validate the message of redemption.

Sep 9, 2018The Gospel of John: An IntroductionAn introduction to the new expository series, These Are Written So That You May Believe: The Gospel of John. The Gospel of John has three major threads that run through it: love, truth, and belief. The purpose of the Gospel is for us to believe the truth about Christ, so that we may enter into a relationship with Him based on love.
